About Us
In 1934 my Grandfather Patrick Caulfield the local school teacher and an amateur archaeologist discovered stone walls under the bog while cutting turf in Belderrig , Co. Mayo in the west of Ireland and wrote to the National Museum about them at the time. His son Seamas Caulfield retired professor of archaeology in University College Dublin changed careers from teaching to archaeology in the 1960's and spent the years since uncovering the story behind these walls . This work led to the recognition of the most extensive Stone Age monument in the world dating over 5000 years old centered at the Céide Fields, Ballycastle, Co. Mayo. The original excavations which were carried out in the 1970's and early 80's are located on my own farm in Belderrig where this unique story is told.
